Triangular beechnuts edible, sweet and nutty — best lightly roasted; F. sylvatica is higher in fagin than the American species. ⚠ Raw beechnuts contain fagin and oxalic acid — eat only in moderation or roast; a longer roast gives a coffee substitute.
